When we begin to see the element of 'life' in objects of history, the narrative of the social discourse precedes the material obsession. Shifting the focus from a conventional reading of art in a museum space, this lecture will explore the often-overlooked and dismissed portrayal of the concept and depiction of 'labour' in the classical Indian art.
The visual presentation will include a curated tableau of the portrayal of the artists & craftsmen, musicians & dancers, garland & fly whisk bearers, farmers & gardeners and many others that have found their presence in art, however, their representation in discourse remains negligible. Interestingly, many of these professions, scenes and scenarios are also seen composed in the Haripura posters of 1930s, painted by Nandalal Bose, depicting - musicians, carpenters, smiths etc. Emphasising on the 'presence of people' as depicted in the Indian Art, the lecture will engage with a select range of visuals dating from c. 2500 BCE to 19th Century, present in the National Museum, New Delhi collection. The lecture will also include the contribution of the commoners in discovering and safeguarding the heritage and history of our county. The presentation will conclude with highlighting the emergence of the profound philosophical leanings that have emanated from the life, toil, skill, knowledge and wisdom of the labouring bodies that have flagged the alternate devotion/liberation practices, steering social emancipation movement in India. Thus, the talk shall be a humble attempt to pay the long pending, 'due gratitude'!

L. N. Tallur (b.1971) received a
BFA in Painting from
Chamarajendra Academy of Visual
Arts (1996), a MFA in Museology
from Maharaja Sayajirao
University (1998), and a MA in
Contemporary Fine Art Practice
from Leeds Metropolitan
University (2002).
Tallur uses sculpture, wall
pieces, interactive work, and
site-specific installations to
expose the absurdities of
everyday life and the anxieties
that characterize contemporary
society. His work incorporates
handmade craftsmanship, found
objects, organic and industrial
material; symbols of developing
India, oftentimes creating a
correlation between traditional
and contemporary customs. The
New York Times eloquently
described the artists work:
each of his pieces is like a
miniature curiosity cabinet,
hand-assembled down to the
smallest detail and packed with
charmed and puzzling
surprises.
Tallurs impressive sculptures
and installations have been
exhibited internationally,
including at solo exhibitions in
Germany, South Korea, India,
China, and the United States. He
recently had a major survey
exhibition at the Grounds for
Sculpture in New Jersey, United
States, in 2020 entitled
Interference Fringe. Selected
group exhibitions include The
Idea of the Acrobat, Bikaner
House, New Delhi (2020); The
Sculpture Park at Madhavendra
Palace (2018, 2017); India and
the World: History in Nine
