Mahendra Pandya (b. October, 1926)
Born in Indore district of Bharuch, Gujarat in 1926. Pandya studied B.A (fine) Sculpture from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara. To his accolade are many awards, scholarship and exhibitions till date. Mahendra has explored in various mediums like bronze, stone, wood, cement and metal sheet. In adhering to and understanding material has been his constant approach which is evident in his stylistic to attain raw quality of the material. The forms are simplified and modified to small scale and even larger depending upon material. One can find variation in sizes as in this tiny sculpture titled Bull.
Mahendra’s venture in making a fine smooth and a Cubist approach in medium like bronze, aluminium, and marble has been remarkable. Seen in entangled at feet as they sprout open above their waist are Girls Playing (ferfugadi) pose a playful act (both their hands held together) is an exceptional gesture captured in aluminium, small sized sculpture. The abstract figures attain a fine smooth quality of the material that adds to its finesse in his sculptures that make part of permanent collection at NGMA, Mumbai.
