Celebrating International Women’s Day
"A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change"
As international women’s day is celebrated around the world, an agreed fact is that it is a day when women in general are recognized for their achievements regardless of divisions, nationality or ethnicity, linguistic variations, background or economic status.
After a journey so long, international women’s day has assumed a new global dimension for women around the world. The international women’s movement is growing into a full fledged expression.
In the year 1848, indignant over women being barred from speaking at an anti slavery convention, two American – Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized congregation of few hundred people and that was America’s first ever women’s rights convention, in New York.
New Zealand was the first self governing nation to allow women voting.
In 1920, in the first known campaign of it’s kind the Egyptian society of physicians went against tradition of Female Genital Mutilation, to declare it harmful for female.
"Woman is a full circle. She has the power to create, Nurture and Transform". Understanding her is a mystery and it will require lots of perseverance and knowledge. Woman is symbol of love, sacrifice, care and enabler of growth.
The able woman nurtures life making her the strongest being. She’s a mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife within a single body.
Women down the ages were victims of oppression, and were deprived of their due respect while they were the real agents to bring in changes to any environment. They persist, they exist even when nothing is going in their favor.
Women these days are more vocal, empowered and aware of their abilities and having greater stake at their rights, which society too, has accepted. The change is visible. Fields like education, healthcare, justice system, politics are no more confined to male only. Presence of female gender is distinctly observable and social elements has agreed upon the new phenomena of empowering women.
The scenario of Bharatbarsha was entirely different during Vedic period to the period when invaders intruded our society- destroying the fabric of it. During ancient era, women here were treated at per with men and our society treated her with honor. Prominence of women were found at every layer of the society and they had proven their ability, lived a full life. It is Bharatbarsha where women were revered and placed at the topmost position when they were praised and worshiped as ‘Devi’ the ritual still continues to this day.
However, with the invasion of foreign enemies, with their destructive way of life and imposing mindsets, new kind of vices too infiltrated our society. They have imposed their values which still are mostly materialistic, with orientation to give and take, over our own values and impregnated deep within – bringing ill effect to an existing mature civilization. From Devi Durga to Radhika, from Arundhati to Savitree, from LakshmiBai AhalyaBai to Matangini Hazra, the women were at the forefront- respected and revered in India which slowly started showing symptoms of foreign influences which in turn lead the society to treat women as a product and without honor.
The struggle of the female gender was long, it is still on, but they are lot more agile, united and rejuvenated to achieve.
Legislation proposed, movements are designed, agreed that women deserve their place in society to their merit, hence, International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world. It’s not any other day, it’s a day to appreciate, accept and shower goodwill to those women who are in fact- Curator of our lives.

Virtual Tour
The Soul Speakers | Curator of Lives
The saga of women in modern Indian Art and contextual Modernism.
The Virtual Tour titled “The Soul Speakers | Curator of Lives” is designed to commemorate the celebration of Women’s Day on 8th March 2021. Women around the world celebrate this very day while it is quite visible that they have attained a state when they are claiming a place in every possible spheres that exist today in any society, any country. And they are not there to be mere present but announcing the glory via their dedication devotion and quality work which speaks in volume about the journey they had traversed.
National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi has many works of the women artists at its own collection which is definitely a major portion of the museum's collection of NGMA. Like in other spheres, women artists had shown their enormous potential in the art atmosphere and chiseled names in painting, sculpture, Etching, Print Making and every other field of artistic groups where they are second to none.
This virtual tour will showcases various women artists creation from the collection of NGMA containing 130 works of art, and I’m sure the visitors will appreciate these works and we also acknowledge all those women artists who's work isn't reflecting on this virtual tour due to shortage of time.
I, further, take pride of the tireless effort of our IT Section who conceive and conceptualize this idea of launching this Virtual Tour while design and development was done by them during World Women’s Day on 8th March 2021.
I wish everyone will enjoy this effort.
