One of the main objectives of the NGMA is to
enable people to look at works of contemporary
art with understanding and sensitivity. In order
to educate the public in art appreciation,
films are screened in the NGMA auditorium
twice daily. More than 500 film shows were
conducted during the year for the general public
and students and teachers from around 60 schools
in and around Delhi. An Art Sketch Club
for students was organised every Sunday in the
Gallery. A summer painting workshop for
students, classified into 3 age groups was
organised in the NGMA in the month of June 2008,
in which 180 students participated and were
awarded certificates. 108 conducted tours
of school groups were organised, and a total
number of 7904 students of various age groups
visited the gallery during the year. Lectures
and seminars on art and art practices were
also organised in the gallery at regular
intervals, including visits by foreign
dignitaries, members of Friends of Museum
Society, Foreign ministers, and organisations
interested in Contemporary Indian Art.
The Educational responsibilities of the National
Gallery of Modern Art are the foremost. It is
fully taken into consideration that the success
of this institution would depend on how well it
could educate the general public and cater to
the needs of professionals and specialists.
Therefore, the programme essentially consists of
following
- Organized visits of school children
- Popular conducted tours and other programmes
for the education of general public
- General service to artists by providing
documentation facilities and educational
exhibitions
- Specialized lectures, seminars and research
for professionals and specialists; and
- Practical guidance through Art Sketch Club
for all age-groups.
This education programme has the specific
responsibility of dealing directly with
individuals to develop their creative abilities
and powers of appreciation.
Elementary and specialized lectures on art
appreciation, criticism and history are also
given, supplemented with showing of films on
various international art trends. In order to
orient the public towards the basic
understanding of the interrelations of visual
and performing arts, programmes of film shows
and tape-recorded music are also arranged.
